A Good Day

mornmist_image (1)A whistling wind whips up everything
including one of my garbage bins.
I hear the clunk, bang, slam
echo through the walls as it crashes
to the frozen ground

the dog still wants his walk
before the snow.
Camouflage jacket in place
the wind’s outrage is no hardship
to him as off he goes.
I hold his retractable leash
and follow, treading softly, slowly
around ice
(left overs from snow the other day)
aware there is more due to arrive.

My teen walks with us to the end
of the road
a quick kiss to the cheek and off
she goes to await her school bus
as Tim and I meander.

Skies are dull, dark white to grey
tree branches dance, writhe, sway
groan and moan to the song of the wind
as I pass a few women
coffee cups in hand
a man espies Timmy
gives a big smile and says:
“Good morning.”
I smile in reply ‘Morning” I say
(knowing he’s right) because
despite the expected snow
I’ll make it a good day.

Endless Love

Time is forever, to a child.
They have no concept of finality
…of endings, and so it is
with mother nature.
There is no compromise in
her forward march.

If spring remained where it is
everything would stay in bud
seed would not begin to grow
roses, never bloom.

If summer with her unrelenting heat
were always on the boil
soon, everything would shrivel up
dry and, die.

If autumn didn’t ever shed
its shroud of kaleidoscopic leaves
what then would enrich the ground
from the mulch they bring.
Where would that endless bounty go
and what would become of the life
of trees which were never left to rest
nor sleep the sleep of the just.

If winter made the decision to stay
(especially here where we are)
everything would remain locked up tight
in deep perpetual freeze.
Nothing could stir to grow or flow.

We curse the heat and bugs of summer
hate the cold and ice
yet, endless seasons would bring
about a nightmare all of their own.

As for me,
I simply count my blessings
pleased to see each come
pleased to see them go.

Three Word Wednesday CCC111 Compromise, Decision, Forward

There was no charm.
Nothing upbeat in any of this.

They’d forecast for days
that this rotten thing was on its way.
Seeing this, many folks flee straight away
others though, too old or stubborn, stay.

Key elements were all in place to enable
this event
warm sea swelling up from the depths
tumultuous skies
winds strengthening, more and more

too late to scramble then when
Sandy’s wrath finally came upon shore.

*Never in my life time have I known a single storm with winds that reached out for over 1,000 miles. I know that many of our Power line workers from the Maritimes have gone south to help the USA with getting their power lines back up and running again.
With this unpredictable climate change, it could happen to any of us, anytime.
