I Believe I Can Fly

In that half awake
half in dreams realm
where everything is real
(or so it seems)
a child wanders
carefree
here, there and, everywhere

There are no borders
no walls or fences to divide
to keep people in or, to
keep people out

Everyone is happy
except..
for the monsters who live
under the bed
hide behind curtains
or, who peep through the windows
because well…
that’s what monsters do
They arrive at night
to frighten you.

In that hazy fog of half-remembered
I could swear in all the yearning
(substitute that for dreams)
knowing for certain if I swing
my arms round and around
in circles at my sides
for long enough and, run as fast
as I possibly could

slowly, I would begin
to lift at first
then, to float

finally, to leave the ground behind
and as long as my arms
kept moving

I could fly.
Oh yes, I could fly

Here, there, and everywhere
in a peaceful sky.

  1. Hi Brenda! you really gave me a sense of floating/flying with your words–man, I hated those things under the bed!
One time I had a dream that I ran so fast that I lifted up and flew–it was an incredible feeling. Would love to dream that again 🙂 Thank you for this beautiful write.

  2. You bring out the innocence and the memories of childhood. I used to dream I could jump from a tall building and just bounce right back up, or stand all day long in the sun and never become tanned. Those were some fun days, fun memories..

  3. …Monsters under the bed, flying…

I know now I can’t fly, but still have to convince myself the dark doesn’t harbor something… well, monsterish. 🙂

  4. I actually believe that (we can fly) to be true. I subscribe to the theory that anything is possible if you believe hard enough.
    I really enjoyed this poem!

  5. In my dreams, I fly with exactly the same motion and thought process.
Especially am pulled in by these lines (and love that you’ve parenthesized):

I could swear in all the yearning
    (substitute that for dreams)
knowing for certain if I swing
    my arms round and around
    in circles at my sides
for long enough and, run as fast
    as I possibly could

    slowly, I would begin
    to lift at first
    then, to float

  6. I remember my first flight from Australia to Malaysia. I was about three years old and had left my gollywog on the plane.

All children believe they can fly. And they should never think otherwise.

  7. Bren, yes, in dreams we can fly. What a magical poem, thanks for writing this. However, last night i was plagued with two horrible nightmares, not sure why either. I will keep this poem to recite before sleep tonight 😉

  8. Right there with you Bren. The monsters under the bed…well, I usually jumped in from about a foot away so they couldn’t grab me. LOL Wonderful write.l

  9. Oh to fly! I thought maybe, just maybe, I might be able to when I was little, if I wished hard enough. You brought back those memories with your wonderful write here Bren.

  10. What fun flying would be, just up in the sky, of course too high and you die, the smog could get you and a plane too, hmmm at least a bird won’t poo on you haha

  11. I still dream every now and then that I can fly; strange how I’ve always imagined it like swimming through the air…I guess I needed something real to equate it to.

    a magically piece.

  12. Beautiful write – made me remember my childhood – I looked behind the curtains, in the wardrobe and under the bed before I turned the lights off…

It is firmly in my memory banks that for a few brief seconds – caught on the gust of a wind – I flew too.

  13. One can always fly in one’s mind….as high as one wishes to. Loved your thoughts here, as you expressed them.

  14. I wanted to fly as a child too – that tranferred into uber-excitement on my first plane trip (prop plane) at 12. I was so delighted I couldn’t stay in my seat. You capture all the desire and wonder here.

  15. smiles…again i love the empowerment….i have always dreamed i could fly…that would be my superpower….smiles…just put my arms out and kite…the monsters do tend to come after us in our most vulnrable moments….

  16. oh i would love to be able to fly…as a kid i sometimes dreamt i could…what a lovely write…so dreamy…and then we just don’t care about the monsters under the bed…or pluck them a yellow flower to brighten them up a bit..smiles
