The Flying Song

Three of us and a dog
walked the beach
collecting treasures to keep.
Shells, glass, feathers and stones
we deemed too precious
to leave.

Filled with salt sea air
and, having given birth
to some of our dreams
exhausted
we left for the drive home.

A request for music soon came from
the back seat as as all the
doors closed.

‘Sure, what song do you want to hear?’

Shrill voices replied in unison

‘The flying song.’

No sooner said than done.

I cranked up the volume
gave it full blast and flew
along the empty road
(going way too fast)
but without a real pair of wings
it is the only way to fly.

It’s not a very good quality recording but, this is a song Céline Dion recorded especially for the (then) new Air Canada TV advertisment.  It has such a great beat and Chloe, her BFF Rebecca and I, would sing along to this at the top of our voices as I drove the car… LOL

  1. Ahh it sure was and is the only ‘way to fly’ – I felt that breeze blow right through my hair – sparkling – Love Lib

  2. but without a real pair of wings
it is the only way to fly.

Well, he’d be a fool who’d try to argue with that – or any other passage. Cooly done, a splendid write.

  3. “Mama Lead Foot” … that’s what my kids used to call me when driving …easy to do with a song like this … smiles … Love you, Bren.

  4. I, absolutely, love Celine Dion and how I have missed hearing this song is surprising. Your post is nicely written to give a place for this music for all to listen to as well.

  5. how lovely and cute the back story of singing with love ones at the tops of your lungs, is in deed the only way to fly.

  6. My kids had a song they always wanted to hear in the car as well. Had not thought of it in a while–and can’t quite recall which one it was just yet. Thanks for the memory reminder.

  7. Aw I love this. See- music can just provide that linkage to our memories…this had such warmth to it…happiness – walking along the beach with your loved ones- and then ‘flying’ home- literally! I’m just about to buy a car- might have to leave the stereo out of the equation though as that could be dangerous!

  8. Riding in a car and listening to music is a given. For some reason I like to listen there better than any other place. And yes, I go along with Brian…some songs give me the lead foot, and some songs bring back memories, and some new songs I hope to remember until I get home so I can add them to iTunes. LOL. And indeed flying along in the car IS the way to go!

  9. More than the song, for me this is about something we can all connect with… That feeling of being behind the wheel, open road ahead and a great song on the radio that makes you feel like you are someone else, driving to some place else… Thanks

  10. what’s funny is that you put up Celine Dione, and I put up Elton John, but I think of them together since I saw them both in concert, in the same place, with my x-husband….weird…. connection, i know…but that’s what came to my mind.

  11. Not a bad song by her, can’t say she is my favorite though haha. Yeah some make me step on it too, and then some slowpokey gets in the way.

  12. love the objects feather, shells, glass, stones, air, sea-salt, dreams, seats and the movement attached to them. Wonderful piece. thanks

  13. ha nice…one can def. fly in a car, open window, sunshine or moonshine and the right song on the radio…nice…and i could smell the salt air…honestly…

  14. ha…there are def songs that give me a lead foot…i gotta watch it cause that tends to fill my glove box with yellow papers…smiles…my boys though are really on a taylor swift kick right now….it is a cool song by celine too…
