He’s Sleeping Beauty
with a gender twist in the tale.
Harry Houdini couldn’t have
painted a better picture
of a means to escape.
Alone in a forest
he’s challenging freedom
at its core.
Is freedom found in
endlessly running away
or,
is it in blocking every
sense that invades
through the day
and, focusing on one.
He holds his breath and
sees his truths as the
world revolves around him.

Fairytale flotation tank and Houdini – what a winning combination. 🙂
He could always ring up David Copperfield .. nice write!
Running and blocking are never escape routes. Maybe his Princess will come save him with a kiss!
I also thought of Harry Houdini and his great escapes, and a twisted Sleeping Beauty tale (but ended up writing something totally different. Loved your take on this!
I just love this one….well written.
Big metaphysical questions you ask here!
I love this magpie! What a meditation on meditation, and just wonderful.
I think he needs to get a new gig.
😉
PS. Insightful and thought-provoking. Thanks!
Houdini seems to be an inescapable link 🙂 Focussing one one sense could bring kind of peace.
Perhaps this is 99% of the population ? , except maybe for some poets like yourself, who have learned how to breathe through their ears !
The Matrix egg farms spring to mind
Or maybe the truth he sees is that holding your breath can only last so long, then he has to come up for air. Or maybe he is cheating like some magic show, who does know? Houdini might, as you cast the light.
I love the mix of philosophy and magic you have splashed together in this poem, Bren. Thank you for sharing this thought provoking twist on freedom. Wonderful words. =D
Waiting for the kiss …in a coffin could take a looong time …
Mmm, running away never helps the problem at hand… but I think it’s only human to want to do that every once and a while. Love the touch of Houdini!
A lovely write, Bren 🙂
lovely, written precise and in love. is freedom focusing on one thing
only? i like that question and the entire poem even more.
i dont think freedom is found in running away, becuase then you will always be a slave to the running you know…and blocking it out is surely only a temporary sessation….i like the touches on fairy tale and houdini in this bren…
He is very much like Sleeping Beauty – waiting for the kiss! k.
Challenging philosophically. Well done.
you’ve used the Houdini and sleeping beauty images. nice take on that.
i thought of them, but decided to go with the William Hurt movie altered states
