It is what it is

Acceptance

It is what it is.

I breathe it in
will myself to hold
it there.

Mould it into all
the folds and creases
that have left the
cloth in tatters
yet,
each ragged edge and
each time worn hole
has taught the lesson
through its wearing.

An untamed sea swims
deep in me
emotions of bitter sweet
salt and tears
but there’s not a memory
I would trade nor wish
to ever fade.

The strings of my heart
stop me from reaching
into the fire to burn.

Sometimes the road we’re on
seems so long
Life’s hard
Mountains rise before our eyes
and no-one cares about the tears
we cry, but us.

Life’s a field of corn
and we are all clutching at straws
trying to cling on in the breeze.

Yes, life’s hard

but,

Dying is forever.

  1. Amazing, this wastes no time wrapping a fist around the heart and squeezing. Line after line of wonderful writing on a difficult subject matter, but pain and suffering still inspire….just in a different way. Great work.

  2. simple, powerful truths. the image of the corn stalk and breeze is rather captivating, as intense as the theme of the piece. wonderful presence in this poem.

  3. whew…this is quite the journey…deep with feeling as well bren…and for each of us it is a bit different but also much the same…felt myself there at times in your words…

  4. Mountains rise before our eyes
and no-one cares about the tears
    we cry, but us.

Wow. I can’t imagine how I would feel trapped in Vic’s body. He inspired so many, gave hope to so many, but struggled with his own happiness, his own sorrows. I guess it is dangerous to wallow in our own sorrows for too long, the key is being able to leave them behind. Makes me think hanging on to sorrow is like being addicted to powerful drugs…

  5. nice…yes..the road can be long and hard sometimes..but as long as we have strength to walk it, it will somehow carry us..

  6. So true…living may be hard, but dying IS forever. “It is what it is” is a saying a very good friend of mine always uses. I have taken it for my own as well…as it resonates with me and helps me to just ACCEPT what is!

  7. Reminds of my/ your “Fabric Of Time” … expressed in a different “colour” … Thank you, my friend.

  8. The daily struggle of accepting pain and loss. I guess I wouldn’t take anything back only because I don’t think I could do without those lessons. This poem touches me.

  9. An untamed sea swims
    deep in me

This I can relate to, absolutely.
The last line is the killer, though – if you’ll excuse the pun!

  10. ## and we are all clutching at straws

    So true..
and i totally loved that title u used
It is what it is 🙂

  11. Yes life is hard indeed, but we must push through because it is what it is, as you say. Also dead is dead, unless you are a ghost then maybe not so much..haha

  12. Very nice Bren. Like the ending lines….I couldn’t find inspiration for this prompt so I am in my haiku mode and community.

Spring is here too but a little cold. My hubby is finally changing our snow tires. Thank goodness winter hasn’t been so bad.

  13. Bren
You touched on so many facets of one’s life….
wonderful and sad, but it speaks to me, and you carry the message
    all the way through…

I could relate to these words:

    “Mould it into all
    the folds and creases
    that have left the
    cloth in tatters
    yet,
    each ragged edge and
    each time worn hole
    has taught the lesson
    through its wearing.”

I was thinking of making a craft using pockets, since we carry so many memories in them. Then I come here and find these words…you really touched me, in many ways!
