He said it would happen in 1984
that we’d all be living by then
under totalitarian law.

Someone would be watching
everything we do
there’d be cameras everywhere
even hidden microphones to
capture if we dare speak out
or question any of their rules.

There is no other agenda
you see,
the party is there
for the good of humanity.

Poppycock and tommyrot
some of us declared
we are a free society
we’re really only as free as
they allow us to be.

It’s all so outdated
an old story and yet,
look at all the cameras
Smile, you’re probably on
one now
all for our own good they say
sound familiar?

Toe the party line
in all that you do
say nothing, do nothing
keep in uniformity because
Big Brother is watching

As soon as I saw the picture it made me think straight away of 1984 and Big Brother. (Uniformity)

George Orwell wrote the novel 1984 in 1949. What vision he had back then, and isn’t it kind of like it with cameras seeming to be everywhere now (for our own good, of course…Hmm) I saw this as a movie too in the 1970’s, scary then and still scary now.

  1. There was a nice rhyming to it, this was quite lyrical, a cool spoken word piece! 🙂

George’s intuition came to fruition lol. A nice political piece, I like it D. 🙂

  2. It is true. Big Brother is always watching. It’s become so common for “security” and “safety” that most don’t even pay attention. It’s simply something that is.

  3. yes, i agree……. cameras infiltrating our lives everywhere… nothing is left to one’s own… not even your dreams..

  4. Yes it may be almost 30 years off from his guess, but we sure have cameras everywhere now. It’s always for our own good. Pffft right! Scary indeed.

  5. The story seems to be more of a warning. It’s something that easy for society to fall into when it tries to make it “for the good of everyone”. Something to think about.

  6. Wow..what a wonderful write…and so thought provoking. Are we really all that free anymore?

  7. everything changed when the towers fell…the institution of acts that for ‘our safety’ allow them to watch…and determine who steps out of line…yeah not far off…

  8. Enjoyed your points in this poem…
remember reading it very clearly in my mind.
    As you said,
    scary then, scary now.

  9. Ah,yes, the picture definitely brings to mind 1984. Orwell was indeed inspired. Today we don’t bat an eye when “Big Brother” watches. Ironic, isn’t it?? Well expressed and thought – provoking writ.
