The number you have reached is…

It’d been months since they’d talked. Nothing had been settled and an angry silence hung heavy in the air between them. It was like that bad smell, the one you know you’ve gotten rid of it but it’s still there, stuck inside your senses.
Many times she picked up the phone only to hesitate and, place it back into its cradle. Sorry is always the hardest word to say and yet… and yet.
She picked up the phone again for the umpteenth time that day, found courage to dial the numbers one by one only to hear a voice say:
‘The number you have reached is no longer in service.’

This isn’t how I’m feeling. Just some thoughts on the prompt, what it made me think because sometimes
we do leave things unsaid and wish then, when it’s too late, that we hadn’t.
